A gorilla trekking permit in Uganda costs $800 per person for foreign non-residents. This is significantly more affordable than Rwanda ($1,500). Permits include one hour with a habituated gorilla family, a ranger guide, and porters. We secure permits well in advance as they sell out quickly, especially during peak season (June–September, December–February).

Gorilla trekking involves hiking through dense tropical forest at altitude (1,500–2,600m). Treks can range from 30 minutes to 6+ hours depending on where the gorilla family is that day. Moderate fitness is recommended — you should be comfortable walking on uneven, sometimes muddy terrain. Porters are available ($15–20) to carry your pack and assist you.

The dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer easier trekking conditions with drier trails. However, gorilla trekking is possible year-round and gorillas don't migrate — you'll see them rain or shine. The wet season (March–May, October–November) has fewer tourists, lower lodge rates, and equally rewarding encounters.

Wear long trousers tucked into socks, a long-sleeved shirt (vegetation can be scratchy), sturdy waterproof hiking boots with ankle support, gardening gloves for gripping branches, a rain jacket (essential — it's a rainforest!), and gaiters to protect against nettles and ants. Bring a daypack with water, snacks, and your camera (no flash).

Yes! Uganda is one of the best places for chimpanzee tracking. Kibale Forest National Park has the highest density of primates in Africa with 13 species, including about 1,500 chimpanzees. A chimp tracking permit costs $200. Budongo Forest and Kyambura Gorge also offer chimp encounters. Many visitors combine gorilla and chimp trekking.

Most visitors need a tourist visa, available as an e-visa online ($50 USD single entry) or an East Africa Tourist Visa ($100, valid for Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda). Apply online at least 2 weeks before travel. The East Africa visa is excellent value if you're visiting multiple countries.

Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for Uganda — you'll need to show your certificate on arrival. We also recommend Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, and anti-malaria medication. Uganda is a malaria-risk country, so prophylaxis is strongly recommended. Consult your travel doctor at least 6 weeks before departure.

Uganda is generally safe for tourists visiting the main safari circuits and gorilla trekking areas. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Queen Elizabeth National Park, and Kibale are all well-managed. Our tours use experienced local guides who know the terrain. Kampala requires normal urban caution. Uganda is known as the "Pearl of Africa" for good reason.

The Ugandan Shilling (UGX) is the local currency. US Dollars are widely accepted at lodges and for permits. Credit cards work at upscale hotels but cash is king in most places. ATMs are available in Kampala and larger towns but scarce near national parks. Carry enough USD cash for tips and small purchases.

Uganda offers incredible biodiversity: tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park, chimpanzees in Kibale Forest, the Big Five in Kidepo Valley, Rothschild's giraffes at Murchison Falls, over 1,000 bird species, hippos, crocodiles, and the spectacular Murchison Falls. It's one of Africa's most underrated safari destinations.
