Yes! South Africa is one of the few African countries where self-drive safaris are popular and practical. Kruger National Park has excellent paved and gravel roads with clear signage. However, guided safaris with expert trackers in private reserves significantly increase your chances of spotting the Big Five. We offer both options.

Yes! The Eastern Cape reserves (Addo Elephant Park, Shamwari, Kariega, Kwandwe) and Madikwe Game Reserve in the north-west are completely malaria-free Big Five destinations. These are perfect for families with young children or travellers who prefer not to take antimalarials. The Western Cape is also malaria-free.

For safari: May–September (dry winter) when vegetation thins out and animals gather at waterholes, making them easier to spot. For Cape Town and the coast: October–March (summer) for warm weather and outdoor activities. The shoulder seasons (April–May, September–October) offer good weather, fewer crowds, and better rates.

Citizens of many countries (including USA, UK, EU, Australia, Canada) can enter visa-free for up to 90 days. Some nationalities need a visa in advance — check with the South African embassy. Important: your passport must have at least 2 blank pages and be valid for 30+ days beyond your departure date.

Start with 3–4 days of Big Five safari in Kruger or a private reserve (Sabi Sands, Timbavati), then fly to Cape Town for Table Mountain, the V&A Waterfront, the Winelands, the Cape Peninsula, and world-class dining. A 10-day trip covers both perfectly.

Kruger National Park is the flagship (one of Africa's largest reserves). The adjacent private reserves — Sabi Sands, Timbavati, Klaserie — offer exclusive, off-road Big Five viewing. KwaZulu-Natal has Hluhluwe-iMfolozi (oldest game reserve in Africa). Madikwe and Pilanesberg are malaria-free options near Johannesburg. Addo in the Eastern Cape is excellent for elephants.

The South African Rand (ZAR) is the local currency. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted everywhere — South Africa has modern banking infrastructure. ATMs are readily available. USD and EUR can be exchanged at airports and forex bureaus. South Africa is generally excellent value for international visitors.

Tourist areas, safari reserves, and the Western Cape are generally safe. Safari parks have professional security and guides. In cities, use normal urban precautions: don't display expensive items, use reputable transport (Uber works well), and stay in tourist-friendly areas. South Africa has 11 official languages! English is widely spoken everywhere, especially in tourism and business. Afrikaans is common in the Western Cape and rural areas. Zulu and Xhosa are the most widely spoken indigenous languages. You'll have no language barriers as a tourist — English works everywhere.

Tipping is customary: restaurants 10-15% of the bill, safari guide $10-15 per person per day, tracker $5-8 per person per day, hotel porters R20-50 per bag, car guards R5-10. At safari lodges, a tip box is usually available for staff. Tips are a significant part of service workers' income.
