A gorilla trekking permit in Rwanda costs $1,500 per person — the most expensive in Africa but includes a premium experience in Volcanoes National Park. The higher fee supports conservation efforts and keeps group sizes small (max 8 people). Permits include one hour with a habituated gorilla family and expert tracker guides.

Both offer incredible, life-changing experiences. Rwanda is more accessible from Kigali (2-hour drive to Volcanoes NP), offers a more upscale experience, and is highly efficient. Uganda is more affordable ($800 vs $1,500 per permit), offers varied terrain in Bwindi, and combines well with other wildlife safaris. Many guests choose based on budget and time.

Rwanda offers far more than gorillas: chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest, Big Five safaris in Akagera National Park, canopy walks above the rainforest, golden monkey tracking, Lake Kivu beach relaxation, Kigali city tours, the moving Genocide Memorial, and the annual Kwita Izina gorilla naming ceremony. A 7-day trip covers the highlights beautifully.

Volcanoes National Park is approximately a 2-hour drive (100km) northwest of Kigali, making it one of the most accessible gorilla trekking destinations in Africa. We provide comfortable transfers and can arrange stops at the Twin Lakes (Burera and Ruhondo) or a cultural village en route. Many visitors stay in Musanze town nearby.

Most visitors can obtain a 30-day visa on arrival or apply for an e-visa online ($50 USD). Citizens of African Union member states and several Commonwealth countries enjoy visa-free entry. The East Africa Tourist Visa ($100, valid for Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya) is great value if visiting multiple countries.

Rwanda is consistently ranked as one of the safest countries in Africa. Kigali is remarkably clean and well-organized. The country has invested heavily in tourism infrastructure and security. You can walk around cities comfortably, and national parks are well-managed with professional ranger guides.

The Rwandan Franc (RWF) is the local currency. US Dollars are widely accepted at hotels and lodges. Credit cards work at upscale establishments in Kigali and some lodges, but cash is preferred elsewhere. ATMs are available in Kigali and Musanze. Carry USD cash in good condition (post-2006 notes preferred).

Kinyarwanda is the national language, with English, French, and Swahili as additional official languages. English is widely spoken in tourism and business. Your guides will speak excellent English. Rwanda has increasingly become English-oriented since joining the Commonwealth in 2009.

Yellow fever vaccination is required for Rwanda. We recommend Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, and malaria prophylaxis. While Kigali's high altitude reduces malaria risk, prophylaxis is recommended for visits to Akagera and lower-altitude areas. Consult your travel doctor at least 6 weeks before departure.

Pack sturdy waterproof hiking boots with ankle support, long trousers, long-sleeved shirts, a rain jacket (essential for the rainforest), gardening gloves for gripping vegetation, gaiters, a daypack, water bottle, and camera without flash. Layers are key — mornings at altitude can be cool (10-15°C) but trekking warms you up quickly.
