Nyungwe Forest National Park covers 1,013 km of montane rainforest in southwestern Rwanda, making it one of the oldest and best-preserved rainforest blocks in Africa.
The park is a biodiversity hotspot supporting 13 primate species, including one of East Africa's largest habituated chimpanzee communities. Angolan colobus troops numbering over 400 individuals are commonly spotted on guided walks.
Nyungwe's elevated canopy walkway offers a rare perspective over the forest interior, while the Albertine Rift bird endemics make it one of East Africa's premier birding destinations.
The park is often combined with Volcanoes National Park for a comprehensive Rwanda wildlife circuit, with Lake Kivu providing a scenic overnight stop between the two.
June to September for clearer forest canopy conditions. The park is accessible year-round but trails are muddier during heavy rain periods (March to May).
