Tanzania, the Essence of Africa
From lions stalking the open savannah to antelope in cool mountain forest and flamingos crowding alkaline lakes, Tanzania’s parks and reserves are a source of wonder for everyone who visits. Everything here is on an epic scale: snowcapped Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa; the vast Serengeti, alive with wildlife; and the Ngorongoro Crater, the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world, home to lions, cheetahs and even flamingos.
The Great Migration
The Serengeti is where the Great Migration begins, the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth. Picture a plain filled with animals by the million, moving towards the horizon in an ancient cycle of survival, and wildebeest crossing rivers where crocodiles lie in wait.
Birds, lakes and quieter parks
Everyone comes for the lions and the rest of the Big Five, but the birdlife can be just as memorable. At Lake Manyara, thousands and sometimes millions of pink flamingos feed on the alkaline water alongside pelicans, cormorants, storks and herons. In Arusha National Park you can explore mountain rainforest and paddle a canoe across its lakes.
With so many parks to choose from, some are easily overlooked, yet they are full of wildlife and almost empty of other visitors. The biggest surprise is Tarangire National Park, where up to 3,000 elephants gather in the peak season. Visits to Maasai villages on the edge of the Serengeti offer a chance to experience local life up close.
