Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s oldest and most popular national park, covering around 14,763 square kilometres of northern Tanzania, and it has been a World Heritage Site since 1981. It is famous above all for the Great Migration, the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth, when millions of animals move across its plains in search of grazing and water.
People explored the Serengeti as early as the late 1800s, but it gained wider fame in the 1920s, when the migration was first witnessed and photographed. It was a sport hunting area in the 1930s until hunting stopped around 1937, became a protected area in 1940, and saw its southern part declared a national park in 1951. In 1959 it separated from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
To watch thundering herds of wildebeest plunge across a river, some falling prey to the crocodiles waiting below, is one of the great moments of any safari. Maasai villages on the edge of the park also offer a chance to meet local people and experience their way of life.
July to September is the best time to visit, with the peak season in July and August.
