Tarangire National Park lies near the Great Rift Valley, close to the Masai Steppe in the Manyara Region of northern Tanzania, and is the sixth largest national park in the country. It takes its name from the Tarangire River that winds through it. The area became a game reserve in 1957 and was declared a national park in 1970.
Tarangire is the great surprise of the northern circuit. In the peak season up to 3,000 elephants gather here, and its lion population is strong, so you may see more of both than in some of the famous parks. It is known for its giant baobab trees and outstanding birdwatching, and it is home to the rare East African oryx.
Because it is so often overlooked, Tarangire is far quieter than the big name parks, and you can often enjoy its wildlife with few other vehicles around.
June to September is the best time to visit, with the peak season in July and August, when elephants gather in large numbers.
