Arusha National Park packs mountain rainforest, rich savannah, alpine moorland and the slopes of Mount Meru into a compact area, so you can take in all of these landscapes in a single day. It lies a short drive from the city of Arusha and is one of Tanzania’s most beautiful and varied parks.
The area was first set aside in 1960 as Ngurdoto Crater National Park to protect its wildlife and natural resources. In 1967 the land around Mount Meru, the second highest mountain in Tanzania, was added, and the park was renamed after the Waarusha people who lived in the area.
The seven Momella Lakes, each a different shade of green or blue, can be explored by canoe, with flamingos on the water and giraffe, zebra, dik dik and warthog along the shore. The park is known for its giraffes, and its green hills and woodland are ideal for walking safaris, with forests that are home to blue monkeys and colobus.
June to October is the peak season, and March to May is also a good time to visit.
