The Ngorongoro Conservation Area covers 8,293 square kilometres west of Arusha in northern Tanzania. At its heart is the Ngorongoro Crater, 264 square kilometres across and the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world. The crater formed around 2.5 million years ago, the conservation area was established in 1959, and it is a World Heritage Site often described as the eighth wonder of the world.
Descending into the crater feels like entering a hidden world, sheltered by the walls of an extinct volcano. More than 25,000 animals live here, including all of the Big Five, and it is one of the few places where lions, cheetahs and flamingos can be seen in a single morning.
Ngorongoro sits at the centre of Tanzania’s northern safari circuit and combines naturally with Lake Manyara and the Serengeti. Many visitors stay around Karatu, midway between Lake Manyara and the crater.
June to September is best, with the peak season from June to August.
