Wear long trousers, a long-sleeved shirt, sturdy waterproof hiking boots with ankle support, gardening gloves for gripping branches, a rain jacket, and gaiters to protect against nettles and ants. Bring a daypack with water, snacks, and your camera.

A gorilla trekking permit in Uganda costs $800 per person for foreign non-residents. This is significantly more affordable than Rwanda ($1,500). Permits include one hour with a gorilla family and a ranger guide. We secure permits in advance as they sell out, especially in peak season.

Gorilla trekking involves hiking through dense tropical forest at altitude (1,500–2,600m). Treks range from 1–6 hours depending on gorilla location. Moderate fitness is recommended — you should be comfortable walking on uneven terrain. Porters are available to carry your pack and assist you.

The dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer easier trekking conditions with drier trails. However, gorilla trekking is possible year-round. The wet season (March–May, October–November) has fewer tourists and lower lodge rates.

You will be within 7 metres of a habituated gorilla family. The one-hour encounter allows incredible observation and photography opportunities. Gorillas are generally calm and curious about visitors. Your ranger guide ensures both your safety and the gorillas' wellbeing.

The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years old in both Uganda and Rwanda. This is a strict conservation rule that cannot be waived. Children under 15 can enjoy other wildlife activities like chimpanzee habituation or nature walks.

A good level of general fitness is important — regular cardio like hiking, jogging, or cycling for 3–6 months before your trip is recommended. Prior high-altitude experience is helpful but not essential. Our guides manage a gradual pace to help acclimatisation.

Altitude sickness can affect anyone regardless of fitness. Our itineraries include acclimatisation days, and our guides are trained to monitor symptoms. We follow "climb high, sleep low" principles and carry emergency oxygen. Most trekkers acclimatise well with proper pacing.
