Kampala to Bwindi
7-9 hours Kampala to Bwindi
Your Uganda safari begins early with departure from Kampala or Entebbe, heading southwest toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to roughly half the world's remaining mountain gorillas. The drive passes through Uganda's spectacular landscape: rolling hills covered in banana and matoke plantations, tea estates turning the hillsides green, and traditional homesteads with children waving from roadside. Cross the equator at the Mityana-Mubende Road marker for the obligatory equator photograph.
Continue the drive through increasingly spectacular scenery as the road climbs toward the highlands. Pass through Kabale, Uganda's hill country, perched at over 1,900m with tea estates and terraced hillsides reminiscent of Rwanda. Arrive at your lodge at the edge of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in the late afternoon, just in time to hear the forest sounds change as the gorillas begin their evening settling behaviour. Your guide provides the gorilla trekking briefing for tomorrow.
Dinner at your Bwindi lodge as the forest comes alive with the sounds of the night. The air here is cool and clean at altitude, the stars brilliant above the forest canopy. Tomorrow you enter the forest to meet mountain gorillas, one of the most profound wildlife encounters on earth.
