Diani Beach on Kenya's south coast is consistently rated one of the finest beaches in Africa and among the best in the world — a 17-kilometre sweep of powdery white coral sand backed by indigenous coastal forest and lapped by the warm, crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean. After the intensity of a Kenya safari, waking up in Diani to the sound of waves, colobus monkeys calling from the forest canopy, and the smell of the ocean is a profoundly restorative experience. Mornings in Diani begin gently. The tide determines the mood of the beach — at low tide, the exposed reef flat offers extraordinary snorkelling and reef-walking, with sea urchins, starfish, octopus and reef fish visible in the clear pools. At high tide, the beach is at its most dramatic: waves break over the outer reef and the turquoise lagoon fills to the shore. Your hotel or beach property will provide snorkelling equipment, kayaks, and beach loungers. Independent operators on the beach offer kitesurfing lessons (Diani is one of the world's top kitesurfing destinations, with reliable Indian Ocean trade winds from July to October), stand-up paddleboarding, and glass-bottom boat trips. The indigenous coastal forest behind the beach is the habitat of the Angolan black-and-white colobus monkey — one of Kenya's most spectacular primates, with their pure white mantle and flowing white tail and shoulder hair contrasting dramatically with the jet black body. These monkeys are extremely habituated to people and can be watched at close range in the hotel gardens and along the forest fringe.
Afternoon options in Diani include a dhow sailing trip on a traditional Swahili outrigger to nearby Wasini Island for a seafood lunch and dolphin spotting, a snorkelling trip to Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park (one of Kenya's most pristine coral reef systems with exceptional visibility and excellent turtle encounters), or simply relaxing on the beach. The Colobus Conservation centre near the beach entrance offers an informative guided walk with guaranteed close-up colobus sightings and education about the conservation challenges facing these primates. The cultural experience of a visit to the Diani local market provides a contrast to the resort atmosphere — a bustling mix of fresh coconut, mango, beachcraft and local life.
Diani evenings are languid and beautiful — the Indian Ocean turns gold and then deep crimson at sunset, fishing dhows move slowly across the horizon, and the cooling sea breeze carries the scent of frangipani from the hotel gardens. Dinner at one of Diani's many beachfront restaurants, from fresh-caught grilled lobster and prawn to Swahili curry with coconut milk and local spices.
