ARUSHA - MARANGU GATE (1,870 METERS) – MANDARA HUT (2,700 METERS) DISTANCE: ~8KM / 5 MILES>>TREKKING TIME: 4-6
Moshi to Marangu Gate ~45 minutes by vehicle
Your Kilimanjaro climb on the classic Marangu Route — the only route with hut accommodation — begins with an early morning transfer from Moshi or Arusha to the Marangu Gate at 1,870 metres above sea level. Check in at the National Park headquarters, where rangers record your details and porters divide loads. Your lead guide delivers a pre-climb briefing covering the "pole pole" (slowly, slowly) philosophy that is the cornerstone of successful high-altitude acclimatisation. The morning hike begins through dense montane rainforest — towering Podocarpus trees draped in Spanish moss, Impatiens kilimanjari flowers in vivid pink, and the calls of Hartlaub's turaco and silvery-cheeked hornbill echoing through the canopy. The trail is well-worn and shaded; altitude gain is gradual across the 8 kilometres to camp.
Continue through the rainforest zone to Mandara Huts at 2,700 metres, typically reached by early afternoon. The hut complex includes sleeping dormitories, a dining hall, and basic flush toilets — a relatively comfortable start to the climb. After settling in, take an optional 30-minute side walk to Maundi Crater, a small volcanic crater offering a preview of the moorland zone vegetation: giant heather, everlasting flowers, and the first glimpses of open sky above the tree canopy. Your chef prepares a hot lunch and dinner in the camp kitchen, fuelling you for the days ahead.
Dinner is served communally at Mandara Huts — typically soup, a hot main course, and fresh fruit. Your guide reviews tomorrow's route to Horombo Huts, checks how each climber is feeling, and monitors for any early signs of altitude discomfort. In bed by 8 PM; at this altitude, sleep comes quickly under cold stars.
