Nairobi - Maasai Mara
Fly to Mara and begin with an afternoon drive.
Nairobi → Naivasha Rift Valley escarpment viewpoint → Narok town → Maasai Mara gate, travelling south-west through the Great Rift Valley on tarmac road then murram track to the reserve entrance.
Approx. 5–6 hours including scenic stops and lunch break
Your Maasai Mara safari adventure begins early. You'll be collected from your Nairobi hotel between 07:00 and 08:00 hrs and head south-west through the Nairobi suburbs before breaking free onto the open tarmac of the Nairobi–Nakuru highway. The first leg takes you through the lush highlands of the Great Rift Valley escarpment — your guide will pause at the viewpoint above Naivasha so you can photograph the sweeping valley floor far below, its soda lakes glinting silver in the morning light. The road descends steeply into the Rift, passing through market towns and vast wheat fields, before the landscape gradually opens into rolling savannah grassland. You'll cross the equator at around the 150 km mark — a photo stop the whole vehicle always enjoys. Acacia thorn trees begin to dot the horizon, and if you are fortunate you may spot your first giraffes browsing along the roadside well before you reach the reserve. Lunch is typically enjoyed at a lodge or roadside stop en route — a welcome break after roughly three hours of driving. After lunch the road narrows to a murram track and the savannah closes in around you, with red-oat grass stretching to every horizon. The excitement in the vehicle builds as the entrance gate to the Maasai Mara National Reserve comes into view. Your Maasai Mara game drive begins the moment you pass through the gate, giving you a taster afternoon drive before reaching your tented camp at sunset.
After clearing the gate into the Maasai Mara, your guide immediately begins scanning the open grasslands for wildlife. The Mara is one of the most densely populated wildlife areas on Earth, and afternoon arrivals are often rewarded with sightings of elephant herds, large zebra and wildebeest concentrations, and — if the season is right — the famed Great Wildebeest Migration crossing the Mara River. Your 4×4 safari vehicle heads to the prime game-viewing circuits: the Mara Triangle to the west, the open Musiara Marsh to the north, or the eastern plains teeming with Thomson's gazelle and topi. Cheetah sightings are common in the afternoon as they hunt on the open plains. Expect to spend 2–3 hours on this introductory game drive before your guide leads you to camp in time for sundowners.
Arrive at your tented camp as the sun dips below the savannah horizon, painting the sky in deep orange and crimson. Freshen up before cocktail hour around the campfire, listening to the calls of hyenas and the distant roar of lions. Dinner — typically a three-course meal of Kenyan and continental cuisine — is served under the stars or in the mess tent, with fellow travellers sharing their first sightings of the day.
