Arusha → Ngorongoro Conservation Area Your adventure begins with a morning pick-up from Arusha. Drive through the scenic
Descent to the Ngorongoro Crater floor via the steep descent road, full-day circuit of the crater floor, ascent via the dedicated ascent road in the late afternoon.
Full crater day; approx. 6–7 hours including descent, crater circuit and ascent
Descending into the Ngorongoro Crater is one of the great wildlife experiences on Earth — and the feeling of dropping over the crater rim into this ancient volcanic caldera never diminishes, no matter how many times you make the descent. Your crater day begins at 05:30 with breakfast before the drive to the rim. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority requires all vehicles to be inside the crater by a set time, so your guide will have you at the descent road early. The drive down the steep, deeply rutted descent road takes around 20–30 minutes and drops 600 metres from the crater rim (2,286 m above sea level) to the crater floor (1,676 m). As the vehicle descends through the rim forest of dense hagenia and podocarpus trees, draped in Spanish moss and alive with Malachite sunbirds and Augur buzzards, you get your first glimpse of the crater floor far below — a perfect oval world 260 km² in area, enclosed by walls rising 600 metres on all sides. The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest intact volcanic caldera and supports approximately 25,000 large animals — the highest density of predators anywhere in Africa. This is one of the best places on the continent to see the critically endangered black rhino, and the crater's five resident rhinos are often encountered on the open grassland south of the central lake. Lion prides — over 60 lions inhabiting the crater — are encountered with exceptional reliability. The Lerai Forest, a dense stand of yellow fever trees, shelters elephant bulls and hippo in the central swamp. The soda lake Magadi draws vast flamingo flocks to the southern shore. Your guide navigates the crater floor tracks methodically to deliver as many sightings as possible before the required exit time.
Lunch is typically enjoyed at the Ngorongoro picnic site on the crater floor — officially the finest picnic location in Africa, with black kites and tawny eagles attempting brazen food theft that has become something of a tradition. The afternoon drive continues through the central grassland and Lerai Forest circuit, where spotted hyena dens shelter clans of 30 or more individuals, Cape buffalo herds of 1,000 or more compact together on the open floor, and the occasional cheetah makes a kill on the dusty grassland. Exit the crater in the late afternoon for the drive back up the ascent road, stopping at the crater rim viewpoint for a final panorama across this extraordinary world. The view from the rim at 17:00 — the crater floor gilded in late afternoon light, wildebeest visible as dark specks 600 metres below — is unforgettable.
Dinner at your lodge on the crater rim, perched above one of the world's natural wonders. The evening mist often rolls over the rim and into the crater, and the air is cool and fresh at 2,200 metres. Your guide will share stories of the crater's remarkable wildlife over dinner.
