After a long international flight, the first hours in Kenya can set the tone for the rest of your safari. Knowing which airport you will arrive at, how your transfer is arranged and what happens before your first game drive helps you start the trip with fewer surprises.
Most international visitors beginning a Kenya safari through Nairobi arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO). Plan your arrival with your safari itinerary in mind, especially if you are continuing to a national park on the same day.
Check that your ticket shows Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) as your Nairobi arrival airport. Do not confuse it with Wilson Airport, which is also used for some domestic and safari flights.
Before departure from JFK, save:
If your flight changes, notify your transfer provider or safari operator as soon as possible.
Review the official Kenyan entry requirements well before your travel date. The Kenyan eTA portal explains how to apply, which documents are needed and who may be exempt. Most foreign visitors need an approved eTA before travelling, but exemptions and rules depend on nationality and circumstances.
Use the official website: Kenya Electronic Travel Authorisation.
Do not rely on old social media posts or a third party website for the final word on entry requirements. Check again close to departure in case rules have changed.
Before you leave New York, confirm who is collecting you and where to meet them. Ask for the driver’s name or contact details and a clear meeting point.
If you are booking a private transfer, confirm whether the quoted service includes airport pickup, luggage assistance, waiting time and transport to your hotel or safari departure point.
Avoid assuming your safari package includes every transfer. Request a written itinerary showing what has been arranged and what you must book separately.
It depends on your arrival time and the route you are taking.
An overnight stay can be useful if:
A same day safari departure may be practical in some circumstances, but it should be based on confirmed flight times and realistic transfer arrangements, not on an assumption that everything will run exactly to schedule.
Some itineraries use domestic flights to reach safari regions. These can save road time, but they may have different luggage restrictions from your international airline.
Before packing, confirm:
Never assume that the baggage allowance on your JFK flight automatically applies to your safari flight.
Your first game drive may be different from what you imagined. Wildlife is free roaming, and sightings depend on the location, time, habitat, season and animal behaviour.
A guide may spend time looking for tracks, checking the surrounding landscape or waiting quietly when animals are nearby. Not every drive includes every iconic species, and no responsible operator can guarantee the Big Five.
Bring your camera or binoculars if you use them, follow your guide’s instructions, and avoid asking the driver to approach wildlife in a way that compromises safety or animal welfare.
Safari days can begin early, when temperatures may be cooler than expected. A practical packing list includes:
Your final list should reflect the season, destination and accommodation style.
Check current travel advice from your government and relevant health authorities before departure. Advice can change between the time you book and the time you travel.
As of 21 October 2026, the U.S. State Department lists Kenya at Level 3: Reconsider Travel. Review the complete official advisory, including its health and security information, before making travel decisions.
Consider appropriate travel insurance and medical evacuation coverage, and ask a qualified healthcare professional about any destination specific health precautions relevant to you.
Before you depart, make sure you know what your booking covers. Ask for the final itinerary and written confirmation of:
A clear written itinerary helps you understand what has been booked and what remains your responsibility.
Your safari should not begin with confusion about pickups, luggage or the first night’s accommodation. A little preparation before flying from JFK to Nairobi can help you start the experience more comfortably.
