Transfer from Nairobi to Chogoria Town (2,000m) on Mount Kenya's eastern flank, gateway to the Chogoria Route, considered the most scenic approach to the mountain. The drive northeast from Nairobi passes through the fertile Kirinyaga and Tharaka-Nithi counties, with Mount Kenya growing ever larger ahead. Arrive at Chogoria and transfer by 4WD vehicle through the upper forest to the roadhead, then begin the trail into the mountain's extraordinary eastern landscape.
Begin the trek through the lower moorland, with the Chogoria Route's signature feature becoming apparent: the Gorges Valley, an ancient glacial valley of extraordinary drama with cliffs dropping hundreds of metres to crystal-blue tarns below. Set up camp at Lake Ellis (3,400m), a beautiful high-altitude lake reflecting the mountain peaks above. The birdlife at Lake Ellis is remarkable.
