Amboseli is world-famous for large elephant herds moving against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. Watch for lion, cheetah, buffalo, and over 400 bird species. Picnic lunch at the lodge. Afternoon game drive as elephants gather at the swamps at golden hour. Return to Nairobi, arriving late evening.
4 hours from Nairobi to Amboseli
Depart Nairobi and drive to Amboseli National Park, arriving after a four-hour journey through the vast Maasai steppe south of the city. As the road descends toward the Amboseli basin, Mount Kilimanjaro reveals itself ahead: Africa's highest mountain, rising 5,895m from the plains, its snow-capped summit floating above the acacia savannah in one of Africa's most iconic landscape compositions. Amboseli's elephant herds, numbering over 1,500 individuals, are the first wildlife you encounter as you enter the park.
Your first Amboseli afternoon game drive reveals why this park is one of Africa's most celebrated wildlife experiences. Enormous elephant families move through the acacia woodland with Kilimanjaro as their constant backdrop. Lions rest in the shade of the fever trees. Cheetahs hunt across the short-grass plains. The Amboseli swamps, fed by underground water from Kilimanjaro's snowmelt, attract extraordinary concentrations of wildlife and waterbirds to the water's edge.
Sundowners at your Amboseli lodge as the last light fades from Kilimanjaro's summit above. The mountain glows pink and gold as the elephants silhouette against the evening sky in images that seem almost too beautiful to be real. Welcome to one of Africa's most extraordinary national parks.
