A Rhino Breeding Success Story
Solio Ranch Conservancy lies about 110 miles north of Nairobi, in the valley between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Mountains. The nearest town is Nyeri, some 24 miles away, and the conservancy covers around 70 square miles in total.
It began as a cattle ranch that took on a focus on rhino conservation, and was formally established as a conservancy in 1970. Its black rhino breeding programme, alongside a large white rhino population, made it one of the most important rhino sites in the region.
That work has had reach well beyond its own boundary: many reserves across East Africa have received rhinos originating from Solio. The setting adds to the appeal, with the conservancy offering great views of Mount Kenya.
