Half-Day Nairobi National Park Tour
A same-day Kenya excursion designed to show a clear entry price, optional private upgrades, and enough context for clients to compare city experiences quickly.
Samburu National Reserve sits in Kenya’s arid north, about 165 square kilometres of dry thorn scrub, doum palm and rocky hills along the Ewaso Ng’iro River. The river is the reason anything survives here: it draws elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard and crocodile out of dry country and makes the riverine strip the centre of nearly every game drive.
What sets Samburu apart is a set of dry-country species rarely seen south of here, known collectively as the Samburu Special Five — Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, gerenuk and the blue-legged Somali ostrich. Wild dog are also present, and leopard sightings along the river are among the better ones in Kenya.
The reserve became a protected area in 1948 and is managed with the Samburu community, whose culture remains a visible part of a visit. It is also the setting for Joy and George Adamson’s work with Elsa the lioness, the story behind Born Free. Samburu pairs naturally with the adjoining Buffalo Springs and Shaba reserves across the river.
July to October and December to March, when the dry country pushes wildlife onto the Ewaso Ng’iro River.
The reserve’s lifeline, lined with doum palm and fig, drawing elephant herds and crocodile and providing the most productive game viewing in the reserve, particularly in late afternoon.
Koitogor rises in the middle of the reserve and the sheer face of Ololokwe dominates the northern horizon — both central to Samburu identity and to the landscape’s character.
The adjoining reserve across the river, reached on a shared circuit, with clear natural springs and more open plains that suit oryx and Grevy’s zebra.
