Ol Pejeta Conservancy lies in Laikipia County in central Kenya, sitting directly on the equator between Mount Kenya and the Aberdares. It covers approximately 224 square miles.
The land was originally a cattle farm in the 1940s, owned by the British settler Lord Delamere. After elephant hunting was declared illegal in 1973 and the Sweetwaters Game Reserve was established in 1988, a sanctuary was created to protect a range of animals including the black rhino. Ol Pejeta itself was established in 2003 as a community and wildlife non-profit conservancy.
It is now the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa. It is also home to the last remaining white rhino of their kind, and is the only place in Kenya where visitors can see chimpanzees, housed in a dedicated sanctuary. Mount Kenya forms the backdrop to much of the conservancy.
