Mara North Conservancy occupies the northwestern section of the Masai Mara in southern Kenya, covering roughly 100 square miles. It sits within the wider Mara ecosystem but is managed separately from the national reserve.
The conservancy was created in 2009 after more than 800 Maasai warriors and landowners banded together out of a determination to protect their land. They worked alongside a number of accommodation operators to build a model in which landowners and safari tourism support one another rather than compete.
It is known above all for that community conservation record. Wildlife viewing is excellent, and because the land is privately managed, guests staying in the conservancy have the option of night game drives — something not permitted inside the national reserve itself.
