Lake Nakuru National Park surrounds a shallow alkaline lake on the floor of the Rift Valley, about 160 kilometres northwest of Nairobi. The park is compact — roughly 188 square kilometres — and ringed by escarpment, yellow-barked acacia woodland and euphorbia forest, which makes it one of the easiest parks in Kenya to cover thoroughly in a day.
Nakuru was protected as a bird sanctuary in 1961, and for decades it was famous for flamingo flocks that turned the shoreline pink. Those numbers now rise and fall with the lake’s water level and alkalinity, and flamingos have shifted between Nakuru, Bogoria and Elementaita — so a spectacular showing is possible but never guaranteed.
What has become more dependable is rhino. The park is fully fenced and functions as a sanctuary for both black and white rhino, with some of the highest densities in the country. Rothschild’s giraffe were introduced here too, and lion, leopard, buffalo, waterbuck and large troops of baboon are all resident. Baboon Cliff and Out of Africa lookout give wide views over the lake.
An escarpment viewpoint looking out across the whole lake and its soda flats, and the best place in the park to understand the shape of the Rift Valley floor.
A waterfall at the southern end of the park that runs strongest after rain, set among acacia and a good picnic stop on a full circuit of the lake.
A stand of tall candelabra euphorbia on the eastern side of the park — an unusual, almost prehistoric landscape and a reliable area for Rothschild’s giraffe.
