Arabuko Sokoke is the largest surviving stretch of coastal dry forest in East Africa, covering roughly 420 square kilometres inland of Watamu and Malindi. It is a remnant of a forest belt that once ran much of the length of the East African coast, and its isolation has left it with an exceptional concentration of species found nowhere else.
For birders it is a destination in its own right. Six globally threatened bird species live here, including the Sokoke scops owl, Clarke’s weaver — which breeds nowhere else on earth — the Sokoke pipit, Amani sunbird, spotted ground thrush and east coast akalat. Around 270 bird species have been recorded in total.
The forest also holds the golden-rumped elephant shrew, a squirrel-sized mammal restricted to this stretch of coast, along with Ader’s duiker, Syke’s monkey, baboon and a small population of forest elephant. Walking and cycling trails run from the visitor centre, and the Nyari viewpoint looks out over the canopy towards the Indian Ocean.
June to October and January to March for drier trails; early morning is essential for the forest’s specialist birds in any month.

A tidal creek and mangrove system adjoining the forest, with a boardwalk through the mangroves and outstanding wader watching at low tide.
