Aberdare National Park protects roughly 766 square kilometres of the Aberdare mountain range in central Kenya, rising from dense montane forest at the base through bamboo to open moorland above 3,000 metres. It is cold, wet and green — a complete contrast to Kenya’s savannah parks — and the drive up through the forest is part of the appeal.
The park was gazetted in 1950 and is best known for its tree lodges, where guests sit above a floodlit waterhole and watch animals come and go through the night. Elephant, buffalo, giant forest hog, bushbuck and, with luck, black rhino appear at the water. The black leopard recorded here has become one of the park’s most sought-after sightings, and the melanistic serval is another speciality.
The Aberdares also hold a place in British royal history: Princess Elizabeth was staying at Treetops in February 1952 when her father died and she became Queen. Beyond the lodges, the moorland holds waterfalls — Karuru, Gura and Chania — and trout streams, with the higher ground offering views across to Mount Kenya on a clear day.
The park’s highest waterfall, dropping in three stages down the moorland escarpment, reached on the higher park roads and best seen in the drier months when tracks are passable.
Treetops and The Ark are built above floodlit waterholes so guests can watch elephant, buffalo, giant forest hog and rhino through the night from a warm viewing deck.
Open high-altitude moorland above the treeline, with giant heather, lobelia and groundsel, trout streams and long views towards Mount Kenya in clear weather.

June to September is driest and best for the moorland and waterfall roads; the forest is green year-round and can be wet at any time.
