Most train journeys around the world are simply a way to get from A to B. The Madaraka Express in Kenya is different. The most famous sighting on the route is the elephant. Tsavo has some of Africa's largest elephant populations, and its iconic red elephants — coloured by dust-bathing in Tsavo's volcanic soil — are regularly seen close to the line. Watching a herd cross the savannah while travelling by train is a memorable experience.
Giraffes are among the easiest animals to spot, their height making them visible from a distance; passengers often see Masai giraffes, family groups and calves feeding among acacia trees. Large zebra herds are common too, their black-and-white markings standing out clearly against the dry grasslands, often grazing alongside antelope and buffalo.
This is one of the most common questions travelers ask — and the answer is yes, but sightings are rare. Lions are naturally elusive and spend much of the day resting in shade or vegetation. Treat any predator encounter as a fortunate bonus rather than an expectation.
