A dolphin watching excursion is different from a traditional wildlife safari. You are not following tracks across the savannah or waiting beside a watering hole. You are travelling across a changing marine environment, looking for animals that move freely through the ocean.
That uncertainty is part of the experience.
Depending on the operator, a dolphin tour from Diani may involve a coastal boat trip or a road transfer south towards Shimoni for a Wasini and Kisite marine excursion. Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park is known for marine biodiversity, snorkelling and dolphin encounters.
Before travel day, confirm where the operator will collect you and where the boat departs.
If the excursion goes to the Wasini and Kisite area, ask about the road transfer from Diani to Shimoni, the boat departure point and the expected return time. A package advertised from Diani may include transport, but this should never be assumed.
Ask for a clear itinerary so you know what to expect before leaving your accommodation.
Once on the water, enjoy the views and listen to the crew’s briefing. Sea conditions may affect the comfort and duration of the trip, so follow instructions about seating, life jackets and movement around the boat.
Keep your camera or phone protected from spray, and avoid leaning over the side to take photographs.
The purpose of the trip is to look for dolphins, not to guarantee that they will appear.
Dolphins may surface briefly, move away from the boat or remain out of sight. A responsible crew should allow the animals to behave naturally rather than chasing them or crowding a group.
If you do encounter dolphins, observe quietly and follow the crew’s instructions. If you do not, you can still enjoy the ocean, coastal scenery and other aspects of the excursion.
Some full day marine excursions combine dolphin watching with snorkelling around Kisite-Mpunguti. The Kenya Wildlife Service lists snorkelling and marine wildlife viewing among the area’s attractions.
Ask whether snorkelling is included, whether equipment is provided and whether conditions are suitable on your travel date. If you cannot swim confidently, tell the operator in advance and do not enter the water unless the activity is appropriate for you.
A Wasini excursion may include a shore visit or meal, depending on the operator’s itinerary. These extras are not standard across every dolphin watching package, so check the details rather than relying on the tour name alone.
Bring sun protection, drinking water, a waterproof bag and any personal medication you require. If the itinerary includes snorkelling, pack swimwear and a towel unless the operator advises otherwise.
Before departure, check the weather and follow the operator’s advice about conditions on the water.
Look beyond the promise of a wildlife sighting. Compare:
The best choice is a trip with transparent arrangements and a crew that puts safety and marine wildlife first.
To explore the marine environment south of Diani, enquire with Plentiful Adventures about available dolphin watching options. Confirm the itinerary, inclusions and transfer arrangements before booking.
