Diani Beach is known for its white sand and Indian Ocean views, but there is another way to experience the coastline: head out onto the water.
A glass bottom boat trip to Robinson Island offers a different perspective on the coast. The destination is a tidal sandbank off Diani rather than a permanent island, and visits are influenced by the tide.
Here is what to know before planning your excursion.
Robinson Island is the name commonly used by local tourism operators for a sandbank off Diani Beach. At lower tide levels, the sandbank can rise above the water, creating a temporary place to step ashore. At higher water levels, it becomes submerged.
Because the name is also used for a different location near Malindi, make sure your booking clearly identifies Robinson Island off Diani Beach, Kwale County.
The boat ride is one of the main attractions. Through the glass viewing panels, passengers may be able to observe parts of the underwater environment without getting into the sea.
What you can see depends on water clarity, sunlight, sea conditions and the route taken by the crew. A glass bottom boat is an opportunity to observe marine life, not a guarantee of seeing a particular fish or coral species.
Some local packages combine the boat ride with a snorkelling stop.
If you choose this option, confirm whether the mask, snorkel, fins and safety equipment are provided. Ask about the conditions at the planned stop and whether the activity is suitable for your swimming ability.
Do not enter the water unless the crew confirms it is safe. Avoid touching coral, chasing fish or standing on the reef.
The sandbank offers a different coastal experience from a mainland beach. When conditions allow, visitors may be able to step ashore, walk across the exposed sand and take photographs of the surrounding sea.
The amount of exposed sand changes with the tide, so the experience may vary from one visit to another. Follow the crew’s instructions about when to land and when to return to the boat.
A boat trip provides opportunities to photograph the coastline, the water and the sandbank. Use a waterproof phone pouch or camera protection, and secure your belongings before boarding.
Remember that the boat and other visitors may be moving while you take photographs. Follow crew instructions and avoid leaning over the boat or standing in unsafe positions.
A good trip starts with clear communication and sensible precautions.
If you have children in your group, confirm age restrictions and supervision requirements before booking.
Ask the operator to confirm the departure time, tide dependent itinerary, transport arrangements, equipment and total cost. The operator should also explain whether snorkelling is included or charged separately.
For your next coastal outing, visit the Plentiful Adventures Diani excursions hub and enquire about a Robinson Island boat tour.
