Seeing dolphins in the wild can be one of the most memorable moments of a coastal holiday. But the quality of a wildlife experience should not be measured only by how close the boat gets.
Dolphins are wild marine mammals. They need space to move, feed, socialise and surface naturally. Responsible dolphin watching gives visitors the chance to appreciate these animals without deliberately disturbing them.
The Kenya Wildlife Service promotes marine wildlife viewing in areas such as Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park and advises visitors to follow good dolphin and whale watching practices.
A boat trip creates a shared space between people and wildlife. Excessive noise, persistent pursuit or attempts to surround dolphins can interfere with their natural behaviour.
Choosing a responsible operator helps encourage better practices and sets a clear expectation: the animal’s welfare comes before the photograph.
Before booking, ask how the crew approaches dolphin encounters. A responsible operator should explain its viewing practices and be willing to accept that dolphins may not appear.
Be cautious of promises that a sighting is guaranteed or that you will always be able to swim with wild dolphins.
If dolphins appear, let the crew manage the encounter. Avoid encouraging the boat to pursue animals that are moving away or to position itself in a way that surrounds them.
Observe from the boat and follow the crew’s instructions about distance and movement.
Feeding and physical interaction can interfere with wildlife behaviour and create safety risks for both animals and people.
Do not attempt to touch, grab, ride or swim after wild dolphins. A respectful encounter allows them to choose their own direction without pressure from visitors.
Dolphins are only one part of the ecosystem. Coral reefs, seagrass habitats, sea turtles, fish and seabirds also contribute to the biodiversity of Kenya’s coast.
If your excursion includes snorkelling, avoid touching coral or removing marine organisms. Do not throw rubbish into the sea, and follow all park rules.
The Kenya Wildlife Service’s Kisite-Mpunguti guidance specifically warns against damaging or removing coral and other marine life, littering, hand feeding fish and interfering with marine wildlife.
Wildlife does not follow a tour schedule. Dolphins may be feeding elsewhere, travelling through another area or simply not visible during your trip.
A responsible operator will explain this honestly. The trip can still offer value through the boat journey, coastal scenery and, where included and conditions permit, other marine activities.
Some marine excursions combine dolphin watching with snorkelling. These are distinct activities, and a dolphin sighting does not mean that swimming alongside the animals is appropriate.
Ask whether snorkelling is included, what equipment is provided and whether the conditions are suitable. Follow the crew’s guidance and do not enter the water if you are uncomfortable or if conditions are unsafe.
When you book a dolphin watching tour from Diani, ask not only where you might see dolphins but also how the operator protects wildlife and keeps passengers safe.
