What this day trip is really best for
Mt Longonot and Lake Naivasha is still a strong day trip, but only for the right client. It works for active travellers who want a climb, a Rift Valley landscape day, and a second lighter activity on the lake. It does not work well for clients who want a relaxed scenic drive with minimal walking.
Current park fees for Mt Longonot
Kenya Wildlife Service currently lists Mt Longonot under the scenic parks category. The published conservation fees are:
- East African citizen: KES 500 adult, KES 250 child or student
- Kenya resident: KES 675 adult, KES 350 child or student
- Non-resident: USD 50 adult, USD 25 child or student
- African citizen: USD 20 adult, USD 10 child or student
These are park entry fees only. Lake activities such as boat rides or Crescent Island visits are operator-priced and should be quoted separately.
How to structure the day properly
The best version of this trip starts early, tackles Longonot before the day gets too hot, and then slows down at Lake Naivasha. Selling it the other way around often leaves clients attempting the climb in the worst heat and arriving tired.
- Early departure from Nairobi or Naivasha
- Morning climb at Mt Longonot while temperatures are lower
- Late lunch or rest after the hike
- Afternoon boat ride or softer Naivasha add-on if energy allows
What clients should know before booking
This is not an easy everyone-can-do-it day. The climb is rewarding but physical, and the day becomes much better when you screen clients honestly for pace, footwear, heat tolerance, and overall trip energy.
- Best for active travellers and private groups that want a different Kenya day out
- Less suitable for very young children, low-mobility guests, or anyone already fatigued from road-heavy touring
- Good add-on for Nairobi-based clients who want one outdoors-heavy day before safari
- Lake Naivasha should be treated as a softer second activity, not the main event
2026 planning notes
- Quote Mt Longonot park fees from the current KWS scenic park schedule
- Keep lake activities separate because operator rates vary
- Start early and protect the hike from midday heat
- Sell this day based on fitness and appetite for activity, not just on scenery
If you want a Rift Valley day that feels more active and less generic, we can build the Longonot and Naivasha combination around the client’s pace instead of forcing the same template on everyone.
