Ever wondered what it feels like to breathe underwater?
You do not need to be an experienced diver to explore scuba diving in Diani. Local dive centres offer introductory experiences for beginners, alongside longer courses for people who want to earn a recreational diving certification.
The important part is choosing the right experience and understanding what it involves before you enter the water.
An introductory experience, often called Discover Scuba Diving, lets a beginner learn basic scuba skills under the direct supervision of a qualified instructor.
It is designed to help you experience scuba diving without first completing a full certification course. It does not qualify you to dive independently or automatically replace the training required for certification.
Your instructor explains how scuba equipment works, how to communicate underwater and what to do if you feel uncomfortable.
You should have time to ask questions and understand the instructions before proceeding.
You will learn about the mask, regulator, buoyancy control device and other equipment used during the experience. Your instructor will explain the relevant safety procedures and check the equipment before you enter the water.
Beginners normally start in a controlled, shallow or confined water environment before proceeding to an appropriate open water experience, if the instructor considers it suitable. The exact sequence depends on the provider and package.
Once you have completed the required preparation, the instructor may guide you through a supervised dive appropriate to the activity and conditions.
You may see reef fish, coral formations and other marine life, but sightings depend on the site and visibility.
Swimming ability and water confidence requirements depend on the type of programme and the provider. Some certification courses have explicit swimming and floating requirements. For example, a currently advertised PADI Open Water package in Diani lists a 200 metre unaided swim and a 10 minute float as prerequisites.
Do not assume that a beginner activity has the same requirements as a certification course. Ask the dive centre about the exact programme you intend to book, and be honest about your swimming ability.
Choose an introductory dive if you want to experience scuba diving during your holiday without committing to a full course.
Choose an Open Water certification course if your goal is to develop the skills and knowledge required to become a certified recreational diver. This takes more time and requires completing the course’s prescribed training and assessment.
If you are unsure, an introductory experience may help you decide whether you want to pursue further training.
Ask the dive centre what is supplied. Depending on the package, equipment may include a mask, fins, regulator, buoyancy control device, cylinder and exposure suit.
Bring swimwear, sun protection, a towel and any personal items the provider recommends. Tell the instructor about relevant health concerns and follow the centre’s medical screening requirements.
Scuba diving requires attention to safety even when the experience is designed for beginners.
If you want to try scuba diving during your Kenya holiday, contact Plentiful Adventures to enquire about introductory experiences offered by local providers.
Confirm the duration, supervision, equipment, prerequisites and price before booking.
