The South African Rand (ZAR) is the local currency. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted everywhere — South Africa has modern banking infrastructure. ATMs are readily available. USD and EUR can be exchanged at airports and forex bureaus. South Africa is generally excellent value for international visitors.
Tourist areas, safari reserves, and the Western Cape are generally safe. Safari parks have professional security and guides. In cities, use normal urban precautions: don't display expensive items, use reputable transport (Uber works well), and stay in tourist-friendly areas. South Africa has 11 official languages! English is widely spoken everywhere, especially in tourism and business. Afrikaans is common in the Western Cape and rural areas.
