The Great Wildebeest Migration is the largest overland wildlife migration on the planet — a continuous, circular journey of over 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras, and 350,000 gazelles across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem.
The Cycle

The migration follows a roughly clockwise pattern through the year:
- January-March: Calving season on the southern Serengeti plains. Over 8,000 calves are born daily, attracting predators.
- April-May: The herds move northwest as rains shift, crossing the central Serengeti.
- June-July: Massive columns head north toward the Grumeti River — the first major crossing.
- July-October: The dramatic Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti and Masai Mara. Crocodiles wait in the waters as hundreds of thousands brave the crossing.
- November-December: Short rains trigger the return south, completing the cycle.
Best Time to Visit
July-October for the iconic river crossings; January-February for the calving season.
Where to Stay
