Kigali to Akagera National Park
2.5 hours from Kigali to Akagera
Depart Kigali and drive east to Akagera National Park, Rwanda's only Big Five safari destination and a remarkable conservation success story. Akagera was reestablished as a major wildlife reserve following the 1994 genocide when it had been stripped of most large mammals. The African Parks Network partnership has transformed the park, reintroducing lions, black rhino, and hippo, and today Akagera offers genuinely exciting Big Five game drives in a stunning Rift Valley lakeside setting.
Arrive at Akagera in time for an afternoon game drive through the park's diverse habitats: papyrus swamps along the Kagera River, acacia savannah, and the extraordinary chain of lakes that form the Rwandan-Tanzanian border. Large elephant herds, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippo, and crocodile are regularly encountered. The park's newly established lion population is growing and increasingly visible.
Your lodge at Akagera sits on the shores of one of the Rift Valley lakes. The evening chorus of frogs, hippos, and herons from the lakeshore is extraordinary. Akagera has become one of East Africa's most exciting wildlife destinations and tomorrow's full-day game drive promises extraordinary sightings.
