Our Narrative
As the pioneer safari lodge in the community-owned Kalama Wildlife Conservancy, Saruni Samburu paved the way for community-centred ecotourism in northern Kenya.
Consisting of just six guest villas, the lodge offers sweeping vistas over the unparalleled landscapes of northern Kenya. With access to both the Samburu National Reserve and the Kalama Conservancy, guests have ample opportunities to encounter the legendary elephant herds that traverse the terrain and spot endangered species including the “Samburu Special Five” — reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Beisa oryx, gerenuk and Somali ostrich.

Signature Experiences
Game drives explore both the Samburu National Reserve and the Kalama Conservancy, where the legendary elephant herds and “Samburu Special Five” roam.
Beyond game drives, guests enjoy guided walks with Samburu warriors, cultural visits to nearby manyattas, swimming in the rock-hewn infinity pools and treatments at the Samburu Wellbeing Space.
Conservation & Community
Saruni Samburu opened in 2008 and is eco-rated “Gold” by Ecotourism Kenya (ESOK). The lodge runs on a modern solar system that has reduced generator use to back-up only, uses biodegradable detergents and collects rainwater whenever possible.
A vast majority of staff are Samburu and members of the surrounding community. The lodge’s financial contribution to the Kalama Conservancy covers an important percentage of the annual conservancy budget, enabling habitat protection, school bursaries and the management of community health centres.
