Kigali to Rubavu (Gisenyi)
2.5 hours from Kigali to Rubavu (Gisenyi)
Depart Kigali and drive northwest to Rubavu (Gisenyi) on the shores of Lake Kivu, one of Africa's Great Rift Valley lakes. The drive through Rwanda's thousand hills is extraordinarily beautiful, the road winding between terraced hillsides covered in sorghum, banana, and tea plantations. Lake Kivu appears dramatically as you descend the last escarpment, its blue expanse stretching 90km south toward the Congo border and Bukavu.
Arrive in Rubavu and check into your lakeside hotel. Spend the afternoon exploring this pleasant lakeside town: the beach at Rubavu is one of the best freshwater swimming spots in East Africa, the lake water warm and clear. Take a boat excursion to Napoleon Island, home to thousands of fruit bats and weaverbird colonies. The Congo's Nyiragongo Volcano, one of Africa's most active volcanoes with its persistent lava lake, is visible across the border.
Sundowners at your lakeside hotel as the sun sets over the Congo hills, turning the lake surface to copper and gold. Lake Kivu is one of Africa's most beautiful and undervisited lakes, sharing its shores between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Dinner at your hotel as lake breezes cool the evening air.
