Kigali to Nyungwe Forest
4 hours from Kigali to Nyungwe Forest
Depart Kigali and drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park, Rwanda's most biodiverse protected area and one of the oldest montane rainforests in Africa. The four-hour drive southwest through the rolling tea estate highlands of southern Rwanda is one of the most beautiful road journeys in East Africa, with the Nyungwe Forest appearing on the hillsides like a dark green wave held back by the red soil of the tea plantations below. Arrive at the park gate and meet your UWA guide for an orientation.
Begin exploring Nyungwe Forest with an afternoon walk on the park's exceptional trail network. The forest canopy walkway, suspended 50 metres above the forest floor, offers a breathtaking bird's eye perspective of the ancient trees and a superb platform for observing the forest's remarkable bird diversity including the Great Blue Turaco and the Ruwenzori Nightjar. The chimpanzee and colobus monkey populations are among Rwanda's most accessible wildlife highlights.
Settle into your lodge on the forest edge as Nyungwe's nocturnal sounds begin: tree hyrax screaming across the dark canopy, nightjars churring, and the distant hooting of owls. Tomorrow you track chimpanzees through one of Africa's finest montane rainforests.
